Solange Live in Toronto

Going to school in Huntsville can have its perks, but it definitely has its downfalls. I’m always missing my favorite singers when they come into town! Every time a favorite singer of mine visits Toronto, I’m in Huntsville at school. One of the things on my to do list for this summer was to make up for lost time. So, when I heard Solange was coming to Toronto, I had to purchase a ticket to her concert, right then and there.I have been a true fan of Solange since 2003 and never turned back. Not only is she my birthday buddy, since our birthdays are three days apart, but I genuinely love her music, the way she embodies life and of course her eccentric style.

I truly had a blast on Saturday night. Solange entered on stage looking dope with her long braids and a tribal print suit.To start the  concert off, she did a rendition of “His Eye Is On The Sparrow,” dedicated to Trayvon Martin and the verdict of “not guilty” that surfaced around that time. Then, she went on to one of my faves, “T.O.N.Y.“ She sang three of my faves in between such as: ‘”Losing You,” “Lovers In A Parking Lot,” and “Sandcastle Disco.” At the end, she ‘punked’ me because she said, “goodnight” but clearly forgot to sing my absolute fave, “I Decided.” She then came back on stage and ended the concert right! Saturday night will be a night to remember. I’m super stocked that I finally got to see Solange live in concert!

Prabal Gurung for TARGET

Last week Jode-Leigh and I checked out the Prabal Gurung collection for Target. Lately, they have been featuring more designers as in-store collections to help make high fashion available to the everyday consumer. Prabal Gurung is a Nepalese American fashion designer that launched his collection in 2009 at New York Fashion Week. With designs being worn by First Lady Michelle Obama and the Duchess of Cambridge he is definitely a designer that should not be ignored. 

 

The pieces were awesome, but as with any "lower end" collection done by a high fashion designer quality can become an issue. Problems with finding the right fit and preserving the quality of the garment can come up. Take for example, the shoes. They were super cute, but the ankle strap didn't tighten quite well enough. Another example would be the quality of the print or pattern. Prabal Gurung is noted for his beautiful patterns and intricate designs on his garments. This can be seen in his line for Target, but the fabric of course wasn't necessarily the greatest. Still, the garments were beautiful and they're perfect for the Spring!

Speed Dating 101

Last night the girls of Purple Lipstick decided to do something a little out of the norm. We went speed dating! We signed up not with any grand expectations in mind but thought it would be super funny and worth a try.
Speed dating proved to be one of the most interesting experiences I've had since being in college. The dynamic was different from usual speed dating (I go to a small school) because I either knew or knew of most of the people there! Still, it was interesting to get to know new people and get reacquainted with old friends.
Thankfully, there weren't too many crazies! Doing this made me really put myself out there. I'm not normally a social person and generally I am not always in the mood to talk to people, but speed dating actually forced me to carry the conversation a lot. The coolest part about speed dating is that in a way you actually get to know yourself a bit better. When 15 people keep asking you, "So tell me about yourself" or "Do you have any hobbies?" or "What do you like to do?" you'll begin to actually think about yourself, your hobbies, or anything you like to do. After talking to a few people I began to realize I used to enjoy doing origami, I like to read, and I like blogging.
At the end of the day, I learned that it's great to put yourself out there and meet new people. I advise anyone reading this to not pass up opportunities to meet other individuals, you just might meet some cool people.

Linen & Purple Rip The Runway Thrift Fashion Show

Fashion Shows are so much fun.

Rachael and I had the privilege of supporting Linen & Purple's first fashion show two weeks ago and we had a blast!

Linen & Purple is a lifestyle and fashion blog. The team consists of four beautiful people who are just excited to relay a positive message through blogging. DOPENESS! I can tell through their blog and interacting with them that they love what they do.

The show had great performances, the models were on point and I loved their items. I was surprised that  everything was from the thrift store because it all looked really good!

The audience actually had a chance to bid on some of the items via twitter. I was sooo sad that I couldn't bid because I don't have a twitter account :(. I lost out on two items that I wanted so dearly. I actually tried to get the items after but I was outbid. But, nevertheless I had a great time and cannot wait for next year!

Toronto Baby!

Heeeeeeeeeeeeeya!

It was so nice to get re-acquainted with our beloved city! We walked around a little, took in the sights then headed over to the mall. Once there, we checked out some stores and were amazed by the deals! So many sales!

Then, we made our way over to Aldo and Little Burgundy to check out this season’s must have shoes

Our day was going so well we hardly realized we were even hungry. So, we went down to the food court and look what they gave us; glasses for our drinks? I hear they even put the food on plates too!

But before leaving the mall we had to highlight some fashionable Torontonians we spotted.

      

All in all, I was a great day out on the town!

Grace Kelly Exhibit

Hey peeps!

So yesterday, we went to an AWESOME Grace Kelly Exhibit that took place downtown, in our city, Toronto (represent! Lol). It was so much fun! It was fascinating to see how Grace's style evolved through two major events of her life: Hollywood  star to princess of Monaco. Even though her style progressed as time went on, the simplicity of her style never changed. Her open-mindedness and her love for the arts was often portrayed through her style. She was a huge fashion icon and popularized many styles that we still crave for today such as the “Kelly” bag. 

Another style that has transcended through time is Kelly's glasses. Kelly was short sighted and so she incorporated sunglasses into her look which helped popularize them in the 60’s and 70’s. VERY INNOVATIVE!

Grace loved simple, turban style hats which is a peaking trend at this moment. Having your own trademark when it comes to individual style is essential and Grace's was her white gloves! She adored white gloves and wore them a lot.

Although a very fashion forward woman, she rarely went to fashion shows but chose her attire from sketches by designers.

Fashion icons together!

Grace Kelly had a photoshoot for a french magazine.Due to a hotel power outage, the dress she originally planned to wear could not be ironed so instead she wore a simple unwrinkled dress made from a McCall's sewing pattern. Now that's a true "fashionista"! 

     

Now, Miss Kelly loved her weave! Oh, yes she did! Her hairstylist was Alexandre of Paris and whenever she went to events she had long hair extensions and many times incorporated braids into her hairstyles.

The highlight of the exhibit for us was her wedding dress. It was simply lovely! According to the exhibit, “Helen Rose designed the gown. According to MGM, creating Kelly’s wedding ensemble had taken six weeks and involved the skills of 35 studio craftspeople, working under strict conditions to preservethe secrecy of their design.”
