OOTD: Crushed Velvet

Still can't believe summer is over! I have made a vow to myself that by the age of 30 I will live somewhere that is hot all year round! Chilly weather is for the birds, and even they migrate south (pun fully intended). So since I'm stuck in the great white north, I'm going to have to stay warm. This fall, I have fallen (I am on a rolllll) in love with crushed velvet. Crushed velvet has a more lustrous appearance than regular velvet which I think gives the material much more personality. It feels very nice to the touch, and can be easily dressed up or down to suit any look you're going for. And did I mention this baby will keep you nice and warm this coming season?

Simple, not so LBD (Little Black Dress)

Hey peeps! So, I find that I enjoy wearing dresses in the summer...a lot. But who doesn't? They're essentially complete outfits with the option to accessorize, soooo convenient lol. With that being said, I found this dress while thrifting and it didn't feel right leaving it in the store. I so fell in love it's perfect fit and little train at the back. I love that it's an sightly edgier take on the classic Little Black Dress (LBD).

Oh also, when bored...in the house...all summer, why not make something! Been dying to try my hand at making a DIY Flower crown, so pictured is my first attempt.

Alumni Weekend 2013: Purple Lipstick Edition

Last weekend our school Oakwood University put on their annual Alumni Weekend. It was great to see old friends from our previous years at Oakwood, and even better because this year we finally had a visitor! Our lovely friend Megan came down from Andrews University to spend the weekend with us and in the process she became an honorary member of Purple Lipstick lol

Rihanna for River Island

In recent fashion news, Rihanna has just unveiled the collection she designed for UK brand, River Island. The collection of about 55 pieces ranges from tops to jeans, hats and even shoes too.  Rihanna is often highlighted for her unique fashion choices, so it was very interesting to see what she would come up with when designing a line of her own.

The line was previewed during London Fashion Week 2013 and was officially released to the public this past Monday. I was really anxious to see what Rihanna had created and couldn't wait until then, so I checked out the show on River Island's Youtube.

Once monday hit, I immediately went online to see what else was there and also what the prices were saying lol. The clothes were all up, and the prices seem to be mostly above average River Island prices ranging from $45-$350.

Some of the items are basics, but still nice at the same time. In general the items are cute, chic and seem to be selling out fast! All I'm saying is I'd rock them lol. Here are some pieces that stood out to me.

It's super exciting to see Rihanna doing big things. River Island even hints that she may do more for them in the future so we'll definitely keep her on our radar.

I Nailed It!

Every Friday night we of Purple Lipstick have a ritual of doing our nails. It may sound funny but it's probably one of our most girlish  habits lol. Whether we're trying out a random design, bright sparkles, looking for a solid neutral color or going for that dark, bloody red, we have realized that the possible combinations are basically endless.
We've learned that you don't have to go to the nail salon to achieve a "professional" look. There are a variety of nail kits for press-on nails that you can design and shape yourself. There are also stick on, or adhesive designs and patterns that go on your nails in a flash. The best this about doing your own nails is that the most basic thing can turn out to look amazing!

Just randomly doing my nails one day and this was the result

Press-on nails by Kiss: It's a great kit since it come with about 200 nails that come in different sizes. It lasts for a really long time and multiple people can use it.

Kalila's nails were shaped into a more rounded triangle after they were glued on. I used  a random beauty supply store brand NK in "Taupe Extreme." Though this polish would be considered "cheap" I love it. It's a great color and it actually last longer without chipping than some of the other well-known brands.

On Jode-Leigh is the Rimmel London Lasting Finish Pro in Lava Red. It claims to last up to 10 days, but from my experience, even with a top coat it lasts maybe about half of that time. Still, it's a beautiful color and I'd recommend it.

Prabal Gurung for TARGET

Last week Jode-Leigh and I checked out the Prabal Gurung collection for Target. Lately, they have been featuring more designers as in-store collections to help make high fashion available to the everyday consumer. Prabal Gurung is a Nepalese American fashion designer that launched his collection in 2009 at New York Fashion Week. With designs being worn by First Lady Michelle Obama and the Duchess of Cambridge he is definitely a designer that should not be ignored.

The pieces were awesome, but as with any "lower end" collection done by a high fashion designer quality can become an issue. Problems with finding the right fit and preserving the quality of the garment can come up. Take for example, the shoes. They were super cute, but the ankle strap didn't tighten quite well enough. Another example would be the quality of the print or pattern. Prabal Gurung is noted for his beautiful patterns and intricate designs on his garments. This can be seen in his line for Target, but the fabric of course wasn't necessarily the greatest. Still, the garments were beautiful and they're perfect for the Spring!

Though this was so cute and creative as the tag!
